Studies suggest that writing in a gratitude journal three times per week might actually have a greater impact on our happiness than journaling every day.

When was the last time you sat down and considered what you’ve got to be grateful for? Amazingly it’s going to take some time to really reflect, however you’re not alone. Gratitude is usually what we take for granted, and why many people don’t pay it any attention.

Let’s do something different starting today and begin to sit down for a few minutes to think about what we’ve got to be grateful for. Here are four thoughts to get you started.

  1. Family – are you blessed to have your loved ones still around?
  2. Health – are you dealing with a health issue or are you healthy with a functioning mind and body?
  3. Money – are you slipping and dodging collectors, robbing Peter to pay Paul and with room for improvement or is your fiscal house solid?
  4. Job – Do you have a job, with income and all the perks or are you wandering from place to place?

These four things are typically taken for granted without any consideration. Your health is a perfect example of being taken for granted.  Only if there is a problem will you reflect on when you had good health. How many people do you personally know that are addressing pain problems, mobility issues, unresolved diagnoses, etc? This alone will put you in a state of gratitude.

Having your family around is comforting and feeds your soul. Many families have lost a child at a young age, or a child loses a parent.  Not your story – another reason to be grateful.

When it involves your job, maybe you don’t like everything about your employer. However, I guarantee you that on payday you still expect a check. This job allows you to pay bills,  provide food, shelter, and clothing for your family. In some countries, people are struggling beyond what you can comprehend, yet they still express gratitude.

While you may not have all the mula(money) you desire, be grateful for what you currently have. You can pay your bills and cover all your other responsibilities, so that definitely shouldn’t be taken for granted.

If you aren’t completely content with your life, you don’t have to be. However, you should take time to reflect on the things you do have, compared to the less fortunate. So, concentrate on your family and your health  and you will soon discover that the word ‘grateful’ and expressing gratitude will take on a whole new aspect for you.
